Nagway Road and on the west end of our property. Where In the Bearspaw Lions Hall and on the property. Take Highway 1A (Calgary to Cochrane) West from Calgary to Bearspaw Road, just west of the Calgary City Limits. Turn North onto Bearspaw Road and immediately East onto Nagway Road. The Bearspaw Lions Hall and grounds are on the North side of Nagway Road. What The market boasts over 100 vendors selling a wide range of: local plants & produce; B.C. fruit; baked goods; locally grown meats (fresh Chicken, frozen beef, bison, elk, and lamb); frozen & smoked fish; artisan products in iron, wood, silver and bone; natural cosmetics; crafted clothing; floral arrangements and other crafts. The market is primarily an outdoor market with some vendor exhibits located inside the clubhouse. This year we are
pleased to have Nicks Catering providing breakfast and lunch from the kitchen
in our clubhouse. History Our market is a summer market (first Sunday in June to the first Sunday in October). It has been running since 1993. The market was the brain child of three people, Lion Orval Grenon and his wife Doreen and Lion Dan Schmaltz. At the time the Bearspaw area was going through a transition from agricultural use (primarily ranching) to residential acreages. A major fund raising activity for the club was a community auction. With the demographic shift the auction lost its luster and fund raising ability. Lion President Orval, set out to find another fund raiser. He was in the Millarville area and saw the impact of the Farmers Market on that rural community. Millarville was similar to Bearspaw in that it did not have a village centre. Lion Orval convinced a few vendors to come to Bearspaw on Sunday after their Saturdays at Millarville. And the rest they say is history… The Market generates over $30,000.00 in revenues. Lions Grenon and Schmaltz were awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship for their proactive endeavor. A unique aspect of our market is that it is run by volunteers and all proceeds go to charitable causes as identified by the Bearspaw Lions Club. The Club regularly contributes to local charities such as the Cochrane Activettes as well as Stars, the Cancer Society, Red Cross, Heart & Stroke Foundation, Interfaith Food Bank & many others.
